Why I made two reals about my Hearing aid struggles today.
Today, I did something I’ve been meaning to do for a while — I made not one, but two reels about my struggles with hearing aids. And let me tell you, it wasn’t easy to put myself out there like that, but it felt necessary. It felt like something that had to be said, not just for me, but for everyone out there going through something similar and feeling like no one understands.
Living with a disability — in my case, hearing loss — isn’t just about not being able to hear clearly. It’s about how society reacts to that. It’s about the systems in place that either help us or make things harder. It’s about how insurance programs like Medicaid often fall short in covering the very tools we need just to live and communicate like everyone else. I shared in my reels how frustrating it’s been to learn that my Medicaid doesn’t fully cover the cost of hearing aids or repairs, unless I have a certain kind of supplemental coverage — and trying to even find that support can be a struggle in itself.
The first reel was about sharing those raw, honest feelings — the confusion, the dead-ends, and the constant calling around for help, only to be told “no” over and over again. The second reel was a little deeper. It spoke to the emotional side of things: how isolating it can feel when your hearing aid isn’t working and you’re trying to get by in a world that’s already hard to hear in. It’s not just about missing sounds — it’s about missing out. On conversations. On connection. On life.
I created these reels because I want people to see us — people with hearing loss, people living with disabilities — and not just glance past us. I want people to hear our stories, and maybe start asking: “Why is it this hard? Why isn’t more being done?” I know I’m not the only one dealing with this, and I hope my story encourages others to share theirs too.
So if you haven’t seen my reels yet, I hope you’ll check them out. Not for likes or views, but to understand. To listen. And maybe, just maybe, to stand with me in pushing for a world where people like me don’t have to fight so hard just to be heard.
Thanks for reading. And thanks for supporting me on this journey.
With love,
Kamala
